This is always the most important way to start a new collection. If I’m not feeling inspired then my pinboard needs a refresh. The magic of creating new designs comes from the ideas infront of me, colours, patterns, photos, pieces of paper, sketches, snippets of fabric, text on a ticket or colours torn from a magazine. Often inspiration is found rummaging in flea markets and junk shops. Friends also send me things of interest, and recently my daughter bought back some wonderful African textiles from the markets of Nigeria. Everything is spread out until it starts to make sense, colours usually pull everything together. What is left out is as important as what remains. An uncontrolled mess doesn’t have direction. A cohesive design board is clearly separated into themes. Now I’m ready to create….
